Linkbait

Linkbait is copy, or a blog post designed to create Links. The content of linkbait is very often controversial, or against popular opinion, and designed to provoke outrage, or to get people talking, and so linking to the post. There are lots of angles you can use to create controversy, and sometimes topical or satirical points work well.

Links

Links are the most important aspect of SEO, and so are crucial to each and every website. Simply put, the more quality links a site has, the more likely it is to be ranked well by the Search Engines. Links from certain sites, such as those in or related to your industry, and from established, or authoritative sites, will be seen as more important than those from your personal Website or unrelated links. It’s also a good practice to make sure that your website address is mentioned on all your stationery and company material.

Link Building

A Linkbuilding Campaign is one of the most important and time consuming aspects of SEO, and is a recognised skill in itself. Links can be obtained in many ways, such as from Linkbait, Directories, Article Marketing, Press Releases, asking customers and suppliers, commenting on your own and other people’s Blogs, Social Media, Forums, and many other places. It can be really hard to generate quality links, and there are companies and tools that promise lots of links, but these rarely prove to be as effective as creating your own links.

Link Equity

Link Equity refers to the importance of a link to your site as determined by the Search Engines. A link from the BBC, a major corporation or a national newspaper will carry more weight as it is seen as more authoritative than a link from your friend's personal website.

Long Tail Keywords

Long Tail Keywords are the 3 or 4 word search terms used to narrow down search results. Initially, you might want to know about something quite generic, such as “best family car”, but then narrow your search down to “family diesel car under £15000”, or narrowing down flight or holiday destinations, for choosing a specific service in a region, or clothing by colours and size. Many SEO companies will say that they will be able to get your site to rank for your chosen keywords, but these are often likely to be long tail keywords. On the whole it’s better to rank for specific long tail keywords, as these are much more likely to bring in targeted traffic that is likely to convert. Also consider that ranking well for very generic terms like “holiday”, “car” or “clothes” isn’t necessarily going to increase your sales.
