10 SEO Tips For Website Developers

Here are 10 useful SEO Tips for Website Developers, in no particular order:

  • Make sure that you give URLs useful and meaningful names, especially for ecommerce sites and for searches. It’s much better for visitors and search engines alike if the URL is memorable, and will also give you an opportunity to use Keywords. You can also use redirects, and some CMS will allow you to specify URL names.

  • Don't use default page titles, and Meta Description for each page. Each page is unique, and so needs a unique page title and description. Page titles and descriptions are important for SEO, so it makes sense to get it right from the beginning.

  • Create a proper Sitemap that lists all pages. In the case of an Ecommerce site, you can list products in sections in order to make the sitemap less cluttered. A sitemap is the main way that the search engines will find all the pages to index, so it’s important to make sure that all pages are listed.

  • Create a robots.txt file. This is another way to ensure that the Search Engines can find the website pages. You can also use it to restrict access to certain pages, such as customer data, or includes files.

  • Create a customised 404 error page so that in the event that a visitor does find a broken or out of date link, they can find what they are looking for. Again, this is a good way to utilise keywords and add internal links.

  • Don't make things over complicated for users. Visitors won’t want to sit through a video, or have to turn off audio, or give their name and email address before they can see the site content. This is especially true for ecommerce sites. A traditional offline store makes the path to purchase as easy as possible, so it should be the same on your website.

  • Make searches relevant. If you have a search facility, make sure that it helpful for misspellings and doesn’t return unrelated results. A poor search facility is next to useless for many visitors.

  • Make the site easy to use. By ensuring that the site is easy to use, and has all the features that users expect, they are more likely to spend time on the site and return to the site.

  • Ensure that the CMS easy to use and effective. Your clients won’t want to update a site that is hard to use. They also won’t want to make the most of their website by using video, images and social media.

  • Use includes to keep the code clean and quick to load. A site that is quick to load will be advantageous for both visitors and search engines alike.
